The subject of whether a nurses’ station/care desk in a mental health environment should be opened or closed is a subject of significant debate and disagreement in both the nursing and design communities. Using readily available research sources and showing 10 case studies of a complete range of care station types, the presenters of this paper conducted a field survey of published peer-reviewed papers over a 30-year period to explore what that research might conclude about this important topic. The results are instructive and informative. A method for objectively and systematically presenting research conclusions to clients will also be shown.
