Track:Advancements in Evidence-Based Design Research
The goal of this research was to understand how the NICU built environment can influence care practices such as staff communication, teamwork, efficiency, patient privacy and satisfaction, and patient care processes. This presentation will share outcomes from a pre- and post-occupancy evaluation that assessed a NICU moving from an open-bay model to a new unit that implemented the single-family room design at an academic medical center. This interdisciplinary research team draws upon the practical expertise of a NICU patient care manager, as well as the experience of researchers in design and communication, to illuminate the research process, results, and lessons learned.
