Yukon Kuskokwim Health Corp. (YKHC), in rural southwestern Alaska, pursued a vision to develop a new comprehensive medical, dental, and mental health facility intended to treat all aspects of physical, mental, and social wellness. Given its remote location, YKHC was challenged with a vulnerable aging population, workforce shortages, and high turnover rates. One unique challenge was the need to design spaces for social connections and community gathering. The finished YKHC clinic employs physical design and programmatic elements that reflect and celebrate the cultural identity of its patients. Hear about the outcomes and lessons learned after a 14-month process designed to improve operations, increase staff recruiting and retention, and automate services.
