“Comorbidity between medical and mental conditions is the rule rather than the exception.” (Druss & Walker, 2011)” Currently the healthcare design community is focusing on how to improve quality, dignity and efficiencies in acute psychiatric units. As numbers of patients with comorbid mental and medical conditions increase the need is shifting to create a new room type. This presentation will depict evidence-based design concepts for an inpatient room to support this unique dual diagnosed population. Concepts were derived from expert medical planners, clinicians, and researchers. They were then tested in a virtual environment and the results will be shared and discussed.
