The Lakeland Regional Health Emergency Department is the most visited in the nation, accommodating more than 210,000 patient visits a year. The 354,000-square-foot Women's and Children's Pavilion decanted the pediatric emergency services into a new dedicated department. New and innovative ideas were implemented throughout the facility, such as the administration of flexible staffing models, after growing the pediatric emergency department from 18 to 33 beds. The extraction of the embedded department into its own distinct ED called for careful consideration of new department protocols, alternative design interventions, and the establishment of strong wayfinding systems from the macro to micro level.
