Northwestern Memorial Hospital (NMH) in downtown Chicago, spans two city blocks including ambulatory and inpatient pavilions. Transformation of the ambulatory pavilion into an inpatient tower began in 2007. SmithGroup is executing the next phase. Team members engaged in the original design and the 2007 transformation allowed SmithGroup to connect with the buildings’ legacy while performing POE’s. The team benchmarked bed towers across the country and leveraged results to convert square-shaped clinics into inpatient floors, while planning for flexibility to support operations for an undefined patient population. This session highlights problem definition and planning and design phases utilizing 4D-views, 3P-simulations and VR.
