Neuroscientists and other researchers have determined that fundamental design qualities influence the healing process, as well as health and well-being. Symmetry, visual complexity/orderliness, harmony, balance, and line/shape all have an important effect on the physical, emotional, and cognitive implications of being in a particular environment. Designers can positively affect patient and caregiver lives by applying what researchers have learned about the experience of these fundamental aspects of design. This roundtable discusses case studies and reports on best practices to integrate research findings into healthcare design and illustrate how research on design fundamentals should be applied in practice in different areas within healthcare facilities.
