Less than half of Americans suffering from mental illness received treatment in 2018, and one major reason for this disparity is the stigma surrounding mental health facilities. As healthcare providers seek to normalize psychiatric care, healthcare designers are doing more than designing compliant, anti-ligature facilities. They’re actively changing the conversation surrounding behavioral health treatment. During this roundtable discussion, moderators will discuss ways designers and contractors can help owners transform the future of behavioral healthcare design, citing examples from the Cordilleras Health System Behavioral Health Facility in Redwood City, Calif., and will explore some of the difficult and often conflicting objectives that define behavioral healthcare design.
