Research in healthcare architecture firms takes on many forms. To understand these forms, three questions are answered from a mixed method research approach: How do practitioners define research? What types of research activities do architecture firms conduct? What are the perceived benefits of conducting practice-based research for advancing healthcare design? Survey research revealed national research trends in practice and interviews with firm representatives provided additional insight. Three models for engaging research in practice with examples will be discussed. Finally, a proposed methodology showing how research can be used to enhance design and generate design knowledge for practitioners will be presented.
