A17 - New Information about Specifying and Cleaning Durable Coated Fabrics for Healthcare (hosted by AAHID)

Explore the challenges of durable coated fabrics in today’s acute healthcare setting. A current nationwide poll of credentialed healthcare interior designers has confirmed widespread failure of durable coated fabric upholsteries, a costly overlook of product warranties, and negative effect of these failures on our HCAHPS scores. There is a further negative effect on the business case when we spend hundreds of thousands of dollars reupholstering existing furniture, diverting money that cannot then be spent on new equipment, hiring quality staff, or funding research into diagnostic and treatment breakthroughs.

Join this panel of healthcare industry experts who will share new information about material selection from ongoing durability tests of heavy-duty commercial healthcare-rated fabrics in both laboratory and real-world environments. Learn about innovative new cleaning and disinfecting protocols to achieve cleaner healthcare environments. This panel is committed to working together to address this mutual challenge, recognizing the ability of a multidisciplinary team of industry partners with shared purpose to creatively solve these problems. They’ll share their findings with the larger healthcare community and provide a furniture specification guide and a process for sharing field reports on the state of durable coated fabrics in healthcare

The AIA Arthur N. Tuttle Jr. Graduate Fellowship in Health Facility Planning and Design supports graduate students and emerging professionals seeking licensure, increasing their awareness of the needs and nature of healthcare facilities, attracting talented young architects and students to the field and advancing the knowledge of planning and design for healthcare environments. There will be two fellows presenting their research in this session: Katy Peditto from Cornell University presents A Space of their Own: Improving Social Support and Quality of Life for Adolescents with Cancer and Navid Jamali from University of Toronto presents An application of AI in hospital design: A Review of Hospital Layout Problems.

The Griffin/McKahan/Zilm (GMZ) fellowship has been established by three leaders in the healthcare planning through the Academy of Architecture for Health Foundation Legends fund to encourage research into healthcare programming and planning.  Ryan Shidler from the University of Arizona will be presenting his research on The Impact Particular Design Elements have on Human Health and Wellbeing Outcomes.

This session is an opportunity to hear from both the Tuttle Fellowship and GMZ Fellowship recipients and learn about their inspiring and innovative work.

A23 - Built Environment Network Educational Session (hosted by The Center for Health Design Built Environment Network)

Every year, members of the Built Environment Network (BEN) travel across the country to learn about innovative solutions and best practices in the industry. With an ongoing focus on improving efficiency, productivity, and quality in healthcare design and construction, owners are shifting their paradigm and looking for new solutions. Come and learn how they are moving to simulated and modular design and use of more prefabricated products and components during construction. New ways to breakdown silos and the need to make collaborative design decisions earlier in the process, along with the increased use of technology will be necessary to enable this change within the industry. Attend this session to gain their perspective and how they plan to implement these changes within their own organizations. Come with your questions and engage in a dialogue during this interactive session.
