SUMMARY:E62 &#8211\; Hydrogen Fuel Cells for Healthcare Energy
DESCRIPTION:Over the past decade\, the NFPA standards – NFPA 99 and NFPA 70 – have changed the paradigm for thinking about hospital “emergency power.”  The recent Categorical waiver from CMS opens the doors to any hospital now using these provisions\, so that any hospital in the country now has a much greater opportunity to evaluate options for its energy systems.    Hydrogen is very likely to be a critical fuel for the future. Most fuel cells being installed now run on methane\, and\, as hydrogen technology matures\, these older units will be replaceable with hydrogen fuel cells\, as the electrical system design for a system of fuel cells will necessarily be different from one that relies only on diesels.    But\, engineering for hydrogen systems is beyond the experience of most hospital engineers.    This session will explore the evolving energy supply paradigm for healthcare\, some of the regulations and best practices for design of hydrogen fueling systems\, and a case study of the little hospital that could – and did – install a hydrogen fuel cell as part of its on-site generation for its Essential Electrical System.
