SUMMARY:E45 &#8211\; Aligning ED Design With Pediatric Mental and Behavioral Health Pathways and Policy Requirements
DESCRIPTION:Emergency Department (ED) care processes and policies shape the experiences of pediatric MBH patients and staff. However\, little is known about how the care processes for these patients in the ED are impacted by the built environment and vice versa. In this session\, we share a framework developed as part of a multi-year Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) grant outlining essential process and policy-related questions that impact key ED design decisions related to MBH care. These questions and design considerations were developed based on literature review\, observations\, case studies\, and semi-structured interviews with 55 staff members at four EDs. The detailed care process for pediatric MBH care\, the challenges encountered in providing care\, and the impact of organizational policies on the care process form the basis of this framework. This framework will help design teams align ED processes and policies with proposed designs to help achieve project goals. Examples from existing and ongoing ED projects will be used to highlight the critical intersections between ED policy\, operations and design considerations that influence care culture.
