E61 – Is Your Passport Up to Date? A Look at Foundational International Healthcare Projects (ICONS)

Educational SessionDesign Forward

While financing, healthcare systems, codes, climates and architectural practices differ across the globe, there is much to be learned from international healthcare projects.  Our profession learns by looking at precedents and we expand our thinking beyond what it is today by looking at examples from other cultures and environments.

This program, the latest in the ICONs series, will provide an overview of a dozen international projects that have something to offer to American designers and planners.  While it may be impossible to recreate these projects in the U.S., there are philosophies about design, climate and sustainability, construction and patient, family and staff engagement that may merit consideration.  This session will focus on those projects that may serve as a basis for North American interpretation and innovation to improve contemporary and future design projects.  The program will also look at the differences in culture practice, healthcare systems, code requirements, and acknowledged best practices to understand how each precedent might have been shaped by its unique location.
