Texas Children’s Hospital needed to relocate and expand its Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and set its focus on patient safety as a result of this transformation. To do this, the planning, design, and construction team needed to improve nurses’ visibility of and access to patients and fellow nurses, a major task that would involve rerouting PICU toilet rooms and connecting pipes to ensure lines of sight to every patient room and quick access for the care team during emergencies. Discover how this team applied Lean and three-dimensional mock-ups to develop design tactics that ultimately add to the unit’s future flexibility, increase patient safety, and decrease staff turnover.
