The U.S. incarcerates more than any other country on the planet. We spend about $77 billion to incarcerate, of which 10 percent is on inmate healthcare. This session will look at how some departments of corrections are starting to implement evidence-based design standards to reduce healthcare costs. Using real world examples, as well as the results from a year-long research fellowship, it will also look at the lack of standards on correctional health design and how that void drives differences in the types of spaces that are provided and impacts the community. It will also discuss how funding changes may affect codes and standards.
