This roundtable discussion aims to envision the future of small community hospitals. The moderators will share their research and practice, and gather participants’ experiences with small community hospitals to explore the effectiveness of various approaches (e.g. critical access hospitals, micro-hospitals, and freestanding ED etc.). The focus is to identify similarities and differences of these models, benchmark their sizes and programs, and discuss how they address unique community needs. The session will develop a research agenda that can build solid evidence for small community hospitals and provide design recommendations for future prototypes that can balance flexibility, efficiency, patient experience, and cost-effectiveness.
