Project Management ConsultantThe Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center

Will Garner, MHA, RHIA, is a Project Management Consultant at The Ohio State University’s Wexner Medical Center and worked on the University Hospital tower project for 6 years prior to its opening. Will played an integral part in the Operational Planning and Workflow efforts by collaborating with physicians, nurses, and leaders to develop efficiencies throughout the design process. Will then shifted his focus on planning and ultimately leading a successful move of roughly 425 patients into the new 2-million-square-foot hospital. Will continues to be involved in the accomplishment of the new University Hospital by managing patient flow and throughput throughout the medical center.

Resources, staffing, technology, patient volumes, and workflows may evolve, making it essential to preserve design intent while adapting to change in order to minimize redesign costs and ensure the environment supports safe, efficient care delivery. This case study highlights one of the nation’s largest healthcare mega‑projects and the operational readiness team responsible for guiding it from early design through activation. Presenters will share how core design principles shaped operational planning, end user engagement, workflow creation, and a training program for over 12,000 staff. The session also highlights how technologies such as advanced monitoring and interactive footwalls were integrated to support future workflows. Additionally, the team will share insights on how simulation exercises involving over 1,000 multidisciplinary participants were used to validate workflows. Attendees will gain practical lessons, strategies, and tools to strengthen their own design and activation efforts.Show MoreClick the title to see all detailsShow More
